Panama is one of the oldest financial centers in the world, known as a very important settlement for offshore companies and for international business that support the national and some surrounding countries through its financial institutions and banking network. The banking network is constituted by 2 government banks, 38 with general license, 34 with international license and 3 banks with representation license.

General License:
issued to banks - organized under Panamanian laws and authorized branches of foreign banks to engage in local and international banking business.

International License:
issued to banks - organized under Panamanian laws and authorized branches of foreign banks to conduct exclusively, from an office established in Panama, transactions that are completed or accomplished outside Panama.

License of Representation:
issued to banks - organized in accordance with foreign laws to establish, exclusively, representative offices in Panama. National and international companies are investing billions of dollars in Panamanian property development and a considerable percentage of the investment is coming from banks loans, due to the monetary stability and low interest observed in this country.

There are also other aspects that have started to affect the Panamanian economic and financial situation, such as the Panama Canal expansion, in which a considerable amount of money will be invested and a large number of companies and banks will take part in this project, either in a directly or indirectly way.

Two oil refineries are in negotiation for being built in Panama, and the deals oscillate around 14.5 billion dollars. The dollar economy and the trade pacts are aspects that need to be considered when investigating the Panamanian financial and economical situation either for investing or living in Panama.
