Cultures and Sports in Panama

 

Panama is a colorful country with a lot of diversities in the cultures. The traditions, custom and language of the people of the country are predominantly Caribbean. A large part of the Panamanian population is Spanish, Chinese, West Indians, and indigenous. This goes to prove the diversities in terms of festivals, ethnicity and even languages. The official language of the country is Spanish, but people have the working knowledge of English and it is used in official reference. Most of the urban Panamanian is bilingual. The country is not only known for its breathtaking beauty but even for its strong economy and the rich folklore.

The country is known for its handicrafts and pottery. The motifs used in the pottery are rich which reflects through the pre-Columbian motifs and the various folk images. These can be found on wide range of articles right from vases to plates. The famous molas made by the kuna tribes are famous for its intricate embroidery. The handicrafts of Panama are a craze among all the foreign tourists who visit the country on a holiday or business. In all the national festival you will find women wearing the nation dress called the “Pollera”.  The “Pollera” is very colorful with intricate embroidery and it takes about a year to make one, and people wear gold jewelry with it. The men are known to wear a traditional hat called the “Montuno”. All the festivals of Panama are bright with the women adorning “Polleras”; there is live bands, a lot of dances and above all the high festive spirit among the people of the country.

Apart from handicrafts, Panama is also known for its love of sports. The people of Panama love to play basketball and baseball. They also take keen interest and participation in horse racing, cycling and tennis. Lots of sportsmen of the country have received medals and accolades at various esteemed sports events. For the more adventurous types, Panama has a lot to offer in water sports. Known for its white sandy beaches, it offers water sports like “wave runners”, “pontoon” boats, kayaks, jet skiing, parasailing, scuba diving and boogie board. For all those whose adrenalin levels are rising at the mention of the adventurous sports, must visit Panama to enjoy all of it along with picturesque views and mouthwatering local cuisine.
